Staying Moisturized on Your River Trip
Staying Moisturized on Grand Canyon Expeditions
The cold, dry winter weather has our skin feeling rough and scaly. We can’t help but be reminded of the effects of a river trip on the skin, and how essential moisturizing is on the river! We Arizonans endeavor to find ways to stay moisturized and comfortable year around, but it is especially important on a river trip.
Stay Hydrated
The first and foremost thing to do for dryness remains staying hydrated. By drinking enough water every day, the skin will stay hydrated from the inside out and won’t take on the negative impacts of this dry climate as easily. Though it may seem like a lot, drinking about a gallon of water a day is what the National Park Service in Grand Canyon recommends.
Moisturize
One of the most important products for men and women to bring on the river would be a great moisturizer. Sometimes a normal sized bottle instead of the tiny travel sized ones proves essential. When packing, unscrew the top, put a small piece of plastic wrap over it and re-screw the lid. This will help with any potential spills during travel. Be sure to moisturize both morning and night to maintain softer and undamaged skin.
Sun Protection
Next, be sure to apply and reapply sunscreen throughout the day. Also wear long sleeves as necessary to protect that hide from the sun. Minimizing burns can be a crucial element for avoiding dry skin. Try to remove sunscreen at night and replace with a heavy layer of moisturizer to prolong the benefits.
Dry Hands
Hands tend to be one of the places that are affected by the dryness the most. Between the exposure to sun, sand, and continual hand washing, your hands can become pretty tattered by the end of your trip. At night, cover your hands with salve or hand cream and wear cheap winter gloves to restore moisture to your hands while you sleep. If you keep up the routine, you can prevent painful cracks and super dry skin.
Dry Hair
Even hair can dry out on trips such as this. For those with hair prone to drying, like us blondes, test a few hair oils or leave-in conditioners. A de-tangler and moisturizer in one – perfect!
Don’t let the arid nature of this awe-inspiring desert be a hindrance. Come prepared and you can beat the dry heat, at least as far as your skin is concerned!
