What to Expect

A Colorado River rafting trip is an active vacation in a wilderness environment. To ensure you have the best experience possible, we recommend showing up with an adventure attitude, ready to roll with the rapid’s waves and whatever other challenges may arise. You’ll spend days hanging on through the Colorado River’s famous (and chilly!) rapids and scrambling down Grand Canyon’s unmaintained trails. At night you’ll camp on sandy beaches or rocky ledges between the canyon walls. There are no hotel accommodations or hot showers. The beauty of this type of vacation is the journey and discovery that comes along with it.

Head on out to Cliff Dwellers Lodge in Marble Canyon, AZ. The hotel is located directly next to Hatch River Expeditions warehouse and about 20 miles to the launch point of Lees Ferry. Have a margarita and a meal at the Cliff Dwellers Restaurant and relax before your grand adventure.
Meet Hatch River Expeditions crew in front of the restaurant at Cliff Dwellers Lodge at 8:30 a.m.. Pick up beverage orders and be ready for a short orientation. At this point you will receive your dry bags so have your duffels packed and ready. Another orientation will take place after the drive down to Lees Ferry where guides will discuss information about raft logistics and river safety. Hop aboard and get ready for tiny splashes of the Paria Riffle and on to the larger torrents of Soap Creek! Experience the fun of the Roaring Twenties where you will find a rapid about every mile or so. Some highlights ahead are Vasey’s Paradise and the beautiful beach at Redwall Cavern.
Take a swim through the pristine waters of the Little Colorado River and drop through tremendous Hance Rapid. A stop at Phantom Ranch might be in store if time allows.
You have now entered the Inner Gorge and the most ancient section of the Canyon. See the diversity of ecosystems throughout the Canyon with side hikes to places such as Elves Chasm or Deer Creek Falls.
The paradise of Havasu Canyon might be in store where you can sit back and relax by the turquoise waters. Lava Falls is ahead so get ready for this infamous rapid!
At Whitmore Wash get ready for your helicopter ride out of the Canyon to Bar 10 Ranch. These usually begin around 7:00 a.m. and the flight lasts about 10 minutes. Have your camera ready because you will be seeing the Grand Canyon from above. Arrive at Bar 10 Ranch and get ready for a fixed wing aircraft flight followed by a shuttle ride back to Las Vegas or Marble Canyon.

Oar Boats with people on them on Colorado River 12 day Full Canyon Trip with Hatch River Expeditions

It was an excellent mix of guides and experience. Having Zack who is a walking historical and geological encyclopedia was invaluable. I thoroughly enjoyed each and every guide. They were all very competent and hard workers. Holden did a great job guiding his first trip.

Wish a bit more ice had been allocated for cocktails in the evenings. Drinks with no ice aren't very palatable. I understand the need to have enough ice for keeping the food fresh but resupply from the motorized trips worked well. So the system to restore a modest amount of ice each night would be a big improvement.

You poop in a bucket with 25 people you just met. You sleep on the ground. You get wet and cold then dry, then wet and cold again. You get sand in your coffee, your food, your sleeping bag, your eyes, ears and every other human orifice. Yet in spite of that, it still turns into a wonderful, magical vacation. We had a great time and hope to do it again. Thank you.
