Do I Need to Pack Bug Spray for My Grand Canyon River Trip?

Do I Need to Pack Bug Spray for My Grand Canyon River Trip?

One of the most common packing questions we get is:
“Do I need to bring bug spray for my river trip?”

Our answer is usually no—and here’s why.

Bugs in the Grand Canyon: What to Expect

Yes, there are bugs in the Grand Canyon—but not the kind that typically bug you (pun intended). Here’s a breakdown of what you might encounter:

  • Gnats and flies: These are rare and usually not a nuisance.
  • Ants: You may see a few, but they’re not typically a problem in camp. Leave them alone and they’ll do the same. Plus, they’re inactive at night.
  • Cicadas: You’ll hear them more than you’ll see them. They’re harmless and part of the canyon’s soundtrack.
  • Moths and butterflies: These are actually lovely to watch and won’t bother you.
  • Spiders and scorpions: While present, they aren’t aggressive and prefer to avoid people.

But the bug that most people worry about—mosquitoes—is virtually nonexistent in the Grand Canyon.

Why Aren’t There Mosquitoes?

It might seem hard to believe. After all, there’s water down there, right?

Yes, but the key difference is that mosquitoes need standing or slow-moving water to breed. The Colorado River is fast-moving, and its water levels fluctuate constantly—conditions that make it nearly impossible for mosquitoes to survive, let alone breed. The same goes for the canyon’s sidestreams. While there are occasional pools, they’re temporary and usually dry up or refill depending on sun and rain.

What Might Bite?

While mosquitoes aren’t an issue, you may occasionally spot a horsefly—but it’s uncommon. There are also a few bees that can sting, though they tend to keep to themselves.

Should You Bring Bug Spray?

You’re welcome to bring it if it gives you peace of mind, but it’s definitely not a necessity.
If you do choose to bring bug spray, please make sure it’s DEET-free. DEET can be harmful to the delicate ecosystem of the canyon.
