Famous Grand Canyon Rapids

The Grand Canyon is a paradise for whitewater adrenaline junkies, so let’s look at some of the most famous adrenaline inducing rapids in the Grand Canyon!  

Let’s start with some of the rapids in the upper canyon:

Hance-  Named after Captain John Hance who mined asbestos within the canyon and later was hired to tell stories as entertainment at the south rim. Located at river mile 77, this rapid drops around 30 feet in half a mile. 

Sockdolager- The word sockdolager means a heavy blow or knock name, a fitting name for a rapid with big lateral waves and big boat swallowing holes that can definitely make you feel knocked around a bit. 

Now on to a few of the rapids in the lower half of the canyon:

Hermit- This rapid is made up of some big compression waves which creates a huge rolling wave train. This is the most roller coaster-like rapid in the Grand Canyon, and one of the most fun ones. 

Crystal-  A massive debris flow in 1966 turned crystal into the notorious rapid we run today. But before that Crystal was just a small splashy rapid that most river runners never batted an eye at. 

Bedrock- This is one of the quickest and easiest rapids to spot from a distance because it has a massive rock that splits the river in two. Though maybe not one of the most fun rides in the canyon, it is one of the most technical rapids and that’s what has earned its fame. 

Dubendorff- Just around a mile downstream from bedrock lies another technical rapid named Dubendorff. This rapid is full of big boulders and big holes and is well known for giving river runners a hard time. 

Lava Falls- Ah the most famous rapid in the Grand Canyon! This is the last big rapid you’ll have before you helicopter out of the Grand Canyon. And of course this rapid is quite close to your Grand Canyon Rafting trip.
