Temporary hotel closures at Grand Canyon and why you should get travel insurance

Grand Canyon National Park recently announced that the park will be temporarily closing to overnight hotel stays starting on December 6th. This closure will allow the park to implement additional water restrictions in response to a series of significant breaks in the Transcanyon Waterline that supplies water to the South Rim.

Breaks in the pipeline have happened numerous times over the years. Usually they are addressed quickly and are not severe enough to require temporary hotel closures at Grand Canyon. Even in this instance where the breaks are significant, the park’s goal is “to restore full operational status for overnight guests on the South Rim as quickly as possible.”

What does this closure mean for your 2026 rafting trip? Probably nothing. Chances are that this particular break will be addressed long before it affects anyone traveling next spring or summer. BUT it does serve as a good reminder for why purchasing travel insurance is so important.

The Grand Canyon is remote, huge, and mostly made up of natural wilderness. Sometimes things happen there that could impact your plans or your trip experience.

We’re happy to help you figure out work arounds when things do come up—for example, if hotels at the South Rim are closed, you could move to a hotel in Tusayan or somewhere else nearby—but once in a while, there just isn’t going to be a workable solution for you. That is where travel insurance comes in!

For more information about what exactly travel insurance is, what type we recommend, and where to look for a good policy, read “Why You Should Get Travel Insurance for Your Grand Canyon River Rafting Trip.”

We also recommend making sure you are familiar with our reservation policies to understand exactly how your booking works and what the rules around cancellations and transfers are. (If you’re already booked, these policies are also available on the back of your invoice and in your Activity Manager.)
