About Hatch River Expeditions

The family-owned company built by a whitewater rafting pioneer.

We love what we do!

“Best part: Every day you get a reward. Someone comes in and says, ‘Hey, we took your trip twenty years ago. Is it still as much fun as it always is?’ We say, ‘Yeah, come on, let’s go.’ That’s the best part: running the river and still being down there. That’s worth a fortune to anyone that owns a company or loves the canyon like we do.” – Ted Hatch, GCRG Oral History Project

Whitewater rafting in Grand Canyon is all we do

We focus 100% on white water rafting trips in Grand Canyon. Hatch doesn’t operate on other rivers or manage other businesses. We give everything we have to making sure our Grand Canyon trips are the best they can possibly be.

We have been doing this for a VERY long time

We became the first commercial rafting operation in North America in 1929 when Bus Hatch began taking guests down the rivers of Utah. Our Grand Canyon trips have been operating since 1934—making 2024 our 90th year in Grand Canyon! Three generations of Hatch family members have made it their life’s work to continually improve and refine our trips to ensure that you have the best experience possible when you choose to experience the Grand Canyon with Hatch.

We hire the best guides

Our guides’ passion for Grand Canyon stewardship runs deep. Their knowledge covers a huge range of topics from river navigation to geology to information on the canyon’s earliest inhabitants and how local tribes still value this place as sacred.

Every new guide Hatch hires already has demonstrated skill at navigating white water AND keeping guests safe and happy. Each person we hire comes with a referral from within our company or from others we trust in the industry. Then, under the mentorship of our senior guides (some of whom have been with us for more than 30 years!), they learn the ropes of Hatch trips and everything they can about Grand Canyon and the Colorado River.

All Hatch boatmen and swampers (assistant guides) are Wilderness First Responder certified, CPR certified, and Food Manager certified. That’s in addition to our own rigorous training programs.

Our safety record

Our business is to put your safety first. Although no trip in Grand Canyon is completely safe, Hatch employees at every level from our owners to our booking staff and guides are concerned above all with making you as safe as you can be on our trips. Our company’s consistently strong National Park Service evaluations reflect our attention to safety.

Our customer service is outstanding

We are a small family run company that believes in treating people right. Our office staffers are there from when you first reach out to find the right trip, to when you’re organizing your travel logistics, to when you’re figuring out what to pack. After that, our guides take over, cooking your meals, teaching you about the canyon, and helping you have the best time possible. By the end of it all, you’ll have a hard time leaving your “river family” behind!
