The Origin of the Term “River Rat”

If you’ve spent time around river rafters or river guides, you’ve likely heard the term “river rat” tossed around. But do you know the history behind this vivid slang?

The term “river rat” has been around for over a century, with some of its earliest recorded uses dating back to the 1800s. Originally, the phrase was used to describe people of lower social status who lived and worked along rivers. For example, “river drivers” — individuals who worked in the lumber industry, transporting logs downriver to sawmills — were commonly referred to as “river rats.” 

At that time, the term wasn’t exactly a compliment; it carried a rough connotation. However, over the years, “river rat” has evolved into a term with a much more positive meaning. What was once a reference to the working class has now come to represent anyone who has a deep love and passion for spending time on or around rivers. This includes whitewater rafters, and as commercial rafting came on the scene, river guides!

Today, a “river rat” is someone who feels a strong connection to rivers — whether they’ve dedicated their career to river-related work or simply cherish the river as an escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
