What better way to begin a Grand Canyon whitewater expedition than to descend below the depths of the Canyon walls via the Bright Angel Trail? Such a voyage begins at the South Rim of Grand Canyon – the hub of Canyon related activities.

Lower Canyon – 4 Day Motorized or 7 Day Oar Powered

Rafting the Grand Canyon on this trip commences with a 9.5 mile hike via the Bright Angel Trail. The descent will offer an elevation loss of over 4000 feet and is no easy trek. Guests must be in excellent physical condition to complete this hike as it is the only way into the Canyon for these particular rafting trips. Hatch River Expeditions recommends booking lodging at the South Rim in Grand Canyon Village for the evening before the hike. The hike begins at 5 AM sharp, so be prepared to hike at least 15 minutes prior to.

Hikers meet up with the boats on this first day and have three days of whitewater rafting fun. At the end of the trip, Hatch River Expeditions’ guides can either fly you back to the South Rim or to Las Vegas dependent on your transportation choices.

Transportation for South Rim Oar Powered Adventures

  • Guests that drive to the South Rim and book a room the night before the hike may leave a car at the Backcountry Parking Lot (located near the Backcountry Information Center on the map below). At the end of the trip Hatch will book a flight for our adventurers to the Grand Canyon Airport near the South Rim, (see Map 2 below) and a taxi will be taken to vehicles. Do remember to bring cash as well as your park entry receipt. For those with multiple vehicles there is the choice to leave a vehicle at the airport and shuttle back to pick up cars at the Backcountry Parking Lot.
  • Guests that book a flight with Bar 10 from Las Vegas to the South Rim will need to book lodging the evening before their trip as well. Upon arrival at the South Rim, guests will need to take a taxi to their hotel – bring cash and also be prepared to pay the park entrance fee. At the end of the expedition Hatch will provide a flight back to Las Vegas.
